Setting up a new iPhone 17 Pro is exciting, but the first 20 minutes matter more than most people think. The choices you make on the setup screens decide how your photos, messages, and apps move over, and how safe your data is if the phone is ever lost.
This guide walks through every setup screen in order, from the first Hello screen to the settings worth turning on right after.
Whether you are upgrading from an older iPhone or switching from Android, the whole process takes around 15 to 30 minutes. What You Need Before You Start
Before you press the power button, prepare these things first so the setup does not get stuck halfway:
- Your old phone — keep it nearby, unlocked, and connected to Wi-Fi with Bluetooth on if you plan to use Quick Start.
- A recent backup — an iCloud or computer backup of your old phone, if you have one.
- Wi-Fi network and password — activation and data transfer need a stable connection.
- Your Apple Account email and password — plus access to the device or number that receives verification codes.
- Your carrier details — have your carrier app or eSIM QR code ready if you are moving your number.
- A charger — keep both phones plugged in during a long transfer, because a direct transfer keeps both phones busy until it finishes.

One more thing worth doing first: update your old iPhone to the latest iOS version. Transfers between phones running similar software versions tend to appear faster and run into fewer problems.
How to Set Up iPhone 17 Pro Step by Step
- Turn it on and pick your language Hold the side button until the Apple logo appears, then swipe up on the Hello screen. Choose your language, your country or region, and how large you want text and icons to appear.
- Choose Quick Start or set up without another device If your old iPhone is nearby, a setup prompt appears on it — tap Continue and follow the instructions on both phones. Without an old iPhone, tap Set Up Without Another Device and continue manually.
- Connect to Wi-Fi Join your home Wi-Fi network. Your new iPhone cannot activate or download anything until it is online.
- Activate your mobile plan Follow the prompts to transfer your number from your old phone or scan the QR code from your carrier. If your carrier is not ready yet, skip this — you can finish it later in Settings.
- Set up Face ID and a passcode Follow the face scan prompts, then create a six-digit passcode. Face ID is used for unlocking the phone, payments, and app sign-ins, so do not skip this step.
- Transfer your apps and data Pick how your data moves over: download from an iCloud backup, transfer directly from your old iPhone, restore from a Mac or PC, or choose From Android and use the Move to iOS app if you are switching. Moving from Android has to happen during setup, so do not postpone it. In a hurry, you can also skip the transfer and start fresh.
- Sign in with your Apple Account Enter your Apple Account email and password, then approve the sign-in code shown on your old device. This connects iCloud, the App Store, Messages, and Find My to your new phone.
- Decide on Siri and Apple Intelligence Choose whether to switch on Siri and the Apple Intelligence features now. Every one of these choices can be changed later in Settings, so there is no wrong answer here.
- Finish the remaining screens Decide on Screen Time, app analytics sharing, and Emergency SOS, then swipe up to land on the Home Screen. Your apps and photos may keep downloading in the background for a while — that is normal.
- Update iOS right away Open Settings, then General, then Software Update, and install the newest iOS 26 version available.

Settings to Turn On After Setup
Find My and iCloud Backup. Open Settings, tap your name, and make sure Find My iPhone is on. In the same menu, turn on iCloud Backup so the phone backs itself up automatically while it charges on Wi-Fi.
Automatic updates. In Settings, open General, then Software Update, then Automatic Updates, and enable the download and install options. Your phone stays protected without you checking manually.
Optimized charging. In Settings, open Battery, then Battery Health & Charging, and turn on optimized charging. It helps slow battery aging by avoiding long stretches at a full 100% charge overnight.
Privacy permissions. Spend two minutes in Settings, then Privacy & Security. Check which apps can use your location, photos, camera, and microphone, and remove anything you do not recognize.
That is everything you need to get your iPhone 17 Pro ready for daily use, with your data moved over and the important protections already switched on. Next, try the Camera Control button and take a few test shots in different lighting — the camera system is where this phone really shows what it can do.
