Sony WH-1000XM6 Specifications: Full Specs, Price and Key Features

The Sony WH-1000XM6 is Sony's flagship wireless noise cancelling headphone, announced on May 15, 2025 as the successor to the popular WH-1000XM5 from 2022.

It keeps the clean, minimalist look of the 1000X series while fixing the most common complaint about its predecessor, because the earcups now fold flat again for easier packing and travel.

The headline upgrades are a new HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3 that Sony says works seven times faster than the older QN1 chip, a larger array of twelve microphones, and a re-tuned 30 mm driver developed with mastering engineers.

Here are the full specifications, key features, and price of the Sony WH-1000XM6.

Key Highlights of Sony WH-1000XM6

  1. QN3 noise cancelling processor:

The new HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3 is seven times faster than the QN1 chip in the XM5, so it can analyse and cancel background noise more accurately in real time.

It works with an Integrated Processor V2 and twelve microphones to keep voices, engine hum, and office chatter firmly in the background.

  2. Twelve-microphone array: Six microphones on each earcup feed the noise cancelling system, while six beamforming microphones with AI processing focus on your voice during calls.

The result is clearer calls in noisy streets and offices, with less wind noise cutting through your conversations.

  3. Folding design returns: After the XM5 dropped the folding hinge, the XM6 brings it back with a reinforced metal hinge and a smaller magnetic carrying case.

The headphones collapse into a much smaller package, which makes them far easier to fit into a backpack or carry-on bag.

  4. Studio-tuned 30 mm drivers: The new 30 mm carbon fibre composite drivers were developed with mastering engineers from studios including Sterling Sound, Coast Mastering, and Battery Studios.

Sony tuned the XM6 for a more balanced, detailed sound with tighter bass and clearer vocals than before.

  5. 30-hour battery life: Sony rates the XM6 at up to 30 hours of music playback with noise cancelling switched on, and up to 40 hours with it switched off.

A three-minute quick charge with a compatible USB-PD charger gives about three hours of playback when you are in a hurry.

  6. Modern wireless features: Bluetooth 5.3 brings multipoint connection for two devices at once, LE Audio support, and Auracast broadcast audio, while LDAC support delivers Hi-Res Audio wirelessly on compatible Android phones. You can also listen over USB-C while the headphones charge, which the XM5 could not do.

Design and Comfort

The WH-1000XM6 looks almost identical to the XM5 at first glance, with smooth oval earcups, a slim headband, and a clean finish in Black, Platinum Silver, or Midnight Blue.

Look closer, though, and the differences matter for daily use, because the earcups now swivel and fold inward, and the headband is wider with softer vegan leather padding that spreads pressure more evenly across the top of your head.

Sony finally brought the folding hinge back, and frequent travellers will notice the difference every single time they pack a bag.

Comfort is a genuine strength, since the earcups use soft synthetic leather cushions that seal well around the ears without squeezing too hard during long sessions.

At approximately 254 grams, the XM6 is only about four grams heavier than the XM5, so most listeners will not notice the difference on their head.

There is no official water resistance rating, however, so these are not the headphones to wear in heavy rain or at the gym.

The carrying case has also been redesigned, swapping the XM5's zipper for a magnetic clasp that opens and closes more quickly with one hand.

The case is noticeably smaller because the headphones fold, which is a practical win for anyone who carries them in a slim bag every day.

Inside the box you will find the headphones, the carrying case, a headphone cable of about 1.2 metres, and a USB charging cable.

Sound Quality and Noise Cancellation

Sound quality is where the XM6 earns its flagship badge, with a tuning that is more neutral and detailed than the warmer sound of earlier 1000X models.

Bass stays deep and controlled without overwhelming the midrange, vocals sound natural and present, and high frequencies have enough sparkle to keep acoustic instruments and cymbals sounding realistic.

The 30 mm drivers cover a frequency response of 4 Hz to 40,000 Hz over a wired connection, and LDAC support on Android raises wireless audio to Hi-Res quality at up to 990 kbps.

Noise cancellation is the other headline act, and the QN3 processor plus twelve microphones make the XM6 one of the strongest noise cancelling headphones you can buy today.

Low-frequency sounds such as airplane engines and bus rumble almost disappear, while voices and keyboard typing are reduced to a faint murmur that music easily covers.

An Adaptive NC Optimizer adjusts the cancellation automatically for your surroundings and air pressure, which helps on flights when cabin pressure changes during takeoff and landing.

If you like to shape the sound yourself, the Sony Sound Connect app offers a ten-band equalizer, up from five bands on the XM5, plus a dedicated Gaming EQ and a 360 Reality Audio setup for spatial sound.

DSEE Extreme uses Edge-AI to upscale compressed streaming tracks, restoring some of the detail lost in low-bitrate files from Spotify or YouTube Music.

Cinema Mode with 360 Reality Audio Upmix turns stereo video sound into a wider, more theatre-like presentation for movies on a phone or tablet.

Battery and Charging

Battery life is rated at up to 30 hours of continuous music playback with noise cancelling on, which is enough for a full working week of commuting or several long-haul flights without reaching for a charger.

Switch noise cancelling off and that figure rises to up to 40 hours, while call time is rated at up to 24 hours with noise cancelling on and up to 28 hours with it off.

Real-world tests from reviewers have often beaten Sony's figures for music playback, with some measuring more than 37 hours on a single charge.

A full charge takes approximately 3.5 hours over USB-C, which is on the slower side compared with some rivals, but the quick charge feature covers most emergencies.

Plug in for just three minutes with a compatible USB-PD charger and you get roughly three hours of playback, which is enough to save a flight or a long meeting.

Unlike the XM5, the XM6 can also play audio over USB-C while it charges, so a dead battery no longer means silence at your desk.

Features and Connectivity

Connectivity is modern and flexible, starting with Bluetooth 5.3 and multipoint pairing that keeps the headphones connected to two devices at the same time.

You can watch a video on your laptop and answer a call on your phone without touching any settings, because the headphones switch sources automatically when a call comes in.

Supported codecs are SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3, with LE Audio roles enabling Auracast broadcasts in supported venues such as airports and gyms.

Smart features are handled through touch controls on the right earcup, plus voice assistants including Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa for hands-free commands on the go.

Speak-to-Chat automatically pauses your music when you start talking, Quick Attention lets you hear announcements by cupping the right earcup, and head gestures let you nod to answer a call or shake your head to decline one.

Scene-based Listening and Adaptive Sound Control adjust ambient sound levels automatically based on where you are and what you are doing.

Call quality gets a clear upgrade from the six beamforming microphones, which use AI noise reduction to separate your voice from wind and street noise around you.

Reviewers have found calls noticeably clearer than on the XM5, especially outdoors, where the older model sometimes let gusts of wind break through.

A 3.5 mm headphone jack is still included for wired listening on planes and older devices, and the headphones keep working passively with the cable even when the battery runs flat.

Price and Availability

The Sony WH-1000XM6 was announced on May 15, 2025, with pre-orders opening the same month and availability following in June 2025 through Sony, Amazon, Best Buy, and other major retailers.

The launch price in the United States is $449.99, which is $50 more than the WH-1000XM5 cost at launch, while European pricing is set at €449.99 and UK pricing at £399.99.

All three launch colors — Black, Platinum Silver, and Midnight Blue — are widely available, and Sony has since added extra colorways in selected markets.

Street prices have already started to fall below the launch price during sales events, so patient buyers can often find the XM6 for less than $449.99.

If you already own the XM5, the upgrade is most worthwhile for the folding design and stronger noise cancellation, but newcomers get one of the most complete wireless headphones available today.
